Testimonial: Getting Started by James Lavergne

Written By Aaron "K Nine" Washington on Sunday, September 28, 2008 | 1:48 PM

It has been a long, long time for me.  I started to help different individuals about 7-8 years ago.  Every time I helped someone I got more and more confidence that I could change the world one person at a time.  Now, I don't push myself on people because I am a firm believer in 2 things:

1.  People will do things when THEY are ready, regardless of what you do or say.

2.  If you provide them with the correct information and lead by example (use your own principles and practice what you preach) then they will be able to see tangible results and that my friends creates interest.

Below you will read one of many testimonials that I have received over the years.  This was written by James Lavergne.  An outstanding man, great father and one of the smartest and most genuine individuals I have ever met in my life.  Here are his words:

"I am sure that for many people, like me, getting started is the hardest part to getting in shape. Weather you are looking to shed some serious weight or lose five pounds, getting started is the first hurdle you face. I wish that when Aaron first approached me several years ago, and asked me to join him in the gym, I had accepted his request. If I did I would be show much further along in meeting my fitness goals.

I did start a fitness program about a year ago, however, and man am I a happy I did. I went from a snug size 38 waist in my jeans to a lose 34. I dropped a net 30 pounds of weight, but because I added muscle too, I estimate total fat lost to be around 45 pounds of fat. I feel great and have the energy to wear out my seven-year-old son. I recently completed a three and a half hour hike up a rugged Korean mountain with a 10-pound backpack strapped to my front, and my 40-pound seven-year-old on my back for the last 2½ hours. As soon as I finished and unloaded my seven-year-old I felt as if I could go another 3 hours. The best thing is it only took 6 months to reach my goals and make these good things happen. Unlike yo-yo diets I have been able to maintain that level of fitness and still enjoy the foods and snacks I love. Not bad for a man at age 42.

The fitness practices and principles taught by Aaron Washington at Big Nerd Nutrition & Fitness (formerly Physical Innovations) are easy to apply and really work. I am living proof. Before I started this program I had very little energy, carried around an extra 45 pounds of fat, had constant heartburn and bloated feeling after meals, high blood pressure and usually fell asleep shortly after returning home from work. Not only was Aaron instrumental in my weight lost, but I am also convinced he may have saved my life. I know he has extended it and made it more enjoyable, that’s a definite.

The hardest part I had was “Getting Started”. It took almost four years for me to get started. I am still slapping myself for not getting started when Aaron first approached me four years ago. I whole-heartedly recommend to every one I know, who is not already in great shape, to adapt the philosophy, practices and principles recommended by Aaron Washington at Big Nerd Nutrition & Fitness (formerly Physical Innovations).

I have discovered the key to “Getting Started”. I have been preaching this to my kids for years; you can eat an entire large pizza, one bite at a time. You can walk a thousand miles, one step at a time. Something can look insurmountable and impossible unless you break it down into smaller more manageable parts. Fitness is no different. Our habits make us and our habits break us. Most of us are in poor physical shape because of bad habits. If we try to change the multitude of bad habits all at once it would be overwhelming. However, if we change one or two a week, it is more reasonable and obtainable. That is what I did, made a multitude of changes, one at a time, and as you began to reap the rewards of good health, it is easier to make more necessary changes.

So start today, start by changing one bad habit that impacts your health or weight. I recommend dropping all soft drinks and replacing them with cold water. I drink 1½ to 2 gallons of water a day. I am always hydrated so I never feel the urge to reach for a soft drink. This action alone could help you drop 5 pounds right away. Try this and then be ready to change another bad habit into a good fitness habit.
Take charge of your health. Remember, our habits make us and our habits break us."

I want to thank James for the positive words of encouragement.  This is for everyone out there.  If you think that even one person can benefit from reading this or needs that one "push" to get them started then please share this link or just have them visit the Second Thought Blog.  Remember you don't have to start be to finish big.  It's the little things that count from day to day.

Yours in Fitness and Health,

Aaron "K Nine" Washington, CFT
